Appearance:
Tall and surprisingly buff for his age, Forge is hardly the typical gadget guy. His Native American heritage is obvious, from his bronzed skin to his strong facial features. Forge’s right leg and right hand are both cybernetic. They are steel and shiny and generally pretty distinctive. Unless he’s going somewhere nice; then they’re kept covered with pants/gloves or synthetic skin. When not in his X-Men uniform, he generally dresses casually; he is most comfortable in jeans, a t-shirt, and work belt. He has a tendency to forget he’s wearing welding goggles, and they usually end up on his forehead. Although generally well-groomed, he is occasionally covered in engine grease or soot. Forge is also known to wear a stupid red headband.
*Uniform:
Forge has never worn a standard-issue X-Men uniform accompanied by buckskin boots. No. That would be silly looking.
Power Corrupts Absolutely
Power Origin: Mutant, shaman, two cybernetic limbs.
Powers:
Forge’s only mutant power is his ‘intuitive mechanical genius’. He is able to subconsciously work out most of the boring details associated with advanced mechanics, programming, or physics; he is able to go from a concept of a device to its construction almost immediately. This does not, however, make him a superior inventor to non-mutants like Tony Stark or Reed Richards. It is a convenient shortcut, but he is limited by current technology and the availability of components. Despite many attempts, he has been unable to produce a perpetual motion machine. Additionally, he can perceive the mechanical and electrical energy within objects, giving him an ability to automatically sense what an object does. Closer examination can tell him exactly how it functions and how it was made; there is very little he cannot reverse engineer. This ability also allows him to quickly figure out how to operate unfamiliar devices and pilot unfamiliar vehicles.
On the complete opposite end of the spectrum, Forge is also trained as a Cheyenne shaman. He knows a wide variety of spells and has created several of his own. He can project himself in an intangible, invisible spirit form. Although generally considered a giant no-no, he is able to use the souls of the recently deceased to power spells that he would not otherwise be capable of, such as creating portals between dimensions.
Weaknesses:
Unlike most powers, Forge’s abilities lie solely within his own mi nd. He cannot shoot laser beams, or invade someone’s thoughts, or heal quickly. Proper use of both his powers and his shaman abilities take time and preparation; he is no better than a baseline human if he’s caught unawares. Furthermore, use of his powers is incredibly limited without a workshop and real components. Although he has some experience in MacGuyvering, he can’t make circuit boards out of rocks. Well, not in a reasonable time frame.
Due to a series of events in Forge’s past, he is incredibly reluctant to use his magical knowledge. He is very aware of how disastrous magic can be, and doesn’t want to subject those around him to it. Although he will use shamanism, it will always be a last resort—most problems can be fixed through other means, and he will try pretty much anything else first..
Getting to the Root of the Problem
Personality:
Practical and efficient, Forge has an impressive ability to see to the heart of a problem and solve it in the simplest way possible. It doesn’t matter if the issue has nothing to do with technology; he’ll still use the same methods. He has little tolerance for people that refuse to act, or overcomplicate issues. Of course, this doesn’t make him heartless or a robot—he’s deeply moral, and has a tendency to harbor regret over mistakes far in the past. He just also believes that talk is far less effective than action, and leaves diplomacy to others. Forge isn’t so great at romantic relationships however, and his approach to them is…well. No one’s perfect. On the other hand, he is incredibly supportive of the people he’s close to, and will do anything in his power to help them.
Forge is almost always informal, usually sarcastic, and very often an asshole. He’s a nice guy, really, but he doesn’t hide his feelings about people and avoids sugarcoating things. Although not quite ruthless, he is completely willing to be the one making hard decisions. He will lie, cheat, and put aside personal feelings if he thinks it’s for the greater good. He’s also sacrificed souls for the greater good, but he regretted that quite a bit. Forge tends to be very cautious of what happens with the technology he creates—although some of it goes public or has patents put on it, he also believes that many of them could be abused far too easily to allow them out of his workshop. Those he trusts, however, get some really cool stuff.
Family:
Background:
Born in a Cheyenne tribe, Jonathan Silvercloud showed great magical potential from a young age. He was taken by Naze, their shaman, for training in the arcane arts. Most of his childhood was spent with Naze, and it was presumed that he would be the shaman’s successor. Jonathan was fine to this and proved to be a fast learner, readily falling into the role of an apprentice. That changed at puberty, when his powers began to develop. He found he could create nearly anything he wanted instinctively, and was registering patents within months. Along with this came an almost impulsive desire to make things, and his magical studies began to get ignored. They were at such odds with his powers that he felt conflicted, and was sure he could only chose one path or the other. Jonathan began to reject Naze’s teachings in favor of the stark nature of technology, taking on the name of ‘Forge’ in the process. He was a different person now, and was, in the way of most teenagers, absolutely sure he was correct. When he was eighteen, he decided to join the army.
Forge was sent to Vietnam almost immediately, and was quick to prove his worth. He had an impressive ability to keep a level head on a battlefield and a knack for strategy. Forge also continued to use his powers, coming up with weapon and armor designs that were far superior to standard issue. He was quickly promoted to sergeant, with a platoon under his command. He proved himself to be an excellent leader, despite his initial misgivings at a command position. Of course, things were not destined to go smoothly forever, and Forge found his platoon ambushed by a far larger group of Vietnamese troops. Even with all of his abilities, the men were quickly slaughtered. In grief and desperation, Forge used a forbidden spell he had learned from Naze—by sacrificing the souls of the fallen, he was able to summon a group of demons to destroy the remaining Vietnamese troops. The attack worked, but after defeating the opposing troops, the demons continued to slaughter everything around. Forge was forced to call in an airstrike to the region. Although it stopped the demons, he ended up losing his right hand and leg in the attack. He was pulled from active duty, and Forge gave up magic entirely.
Forge went to work for the government, becoming one of their primary weapons designers after Tony Stark quit. One of his more noteworthy creations was a neutralizing gun, capable of suppressing any superhuman powers. Somehow, he didn’t see its potential for abuse, and was surprised when it was used on mutants. In an effort to stop the gun from being used on Rogue, it accidentally hit Storm. He prevented her from being arrested and helped her cope with her new, powerless situation, but their relationship got a little awkward when she realized he was the one that created the neutralizer gun. She left, and he was more upset than he had any right to be. The next time they met, it was the X-Men saving him.
Storm was around again while Forge was trying to prevent some of the aftereffects of his demon-summoning in Vietnam, and they both found themselves pulled into an alternate dimension. They were the only people there, and began to build a life together. Forge was able to create a device to return Storm’s powers. Eventually, however, they realized that the real world was going to be destroyed while they were apart from it. They decided to sacrifice the life they had built, and return to Earth. Through the combined use of their powers, they were able to escape. In saving the world, Forge was forced to use his shaman abilities once again, breaking his abstinence from magic.
Afterwards, Forge spent a good deal of time in exile, working to regain the magical prowess he once had. Although he did not ignore his technological abilities, they took a back seat for the first time since they had developed. He managed to create a spell to separate his spirit from his physical form, found out that Storm was in trouble during his spirit travels, and once again had to rescue her. Their relationship was rekindled, and Forge joined the X-Men. Although he was active as a member, his real benefit was once again inventing—and serving as an expert on arcane matters. His relationship with Storm was doomed to fail, however, and shortly after she became a leader of the X-Men, he inadvertently broke up with her. After proposing. It was awkward, and he left the X-Men.
Once again Forge spent a good deal of time on his own, occasionally creating things for the government but mostly working freelance. He learned his lesson about dealing with them. After a while he began to miss active duty, however, and when he got an offer to rejoin the X-Men it didn’t take him too long to make his decision. Although he considered himself far too old to be an active member, he had no problems with being on reserve and teaching the next generation of students. Besides, he figured that the X-Men could be trusted with most of the things he created. Or, he hoped they could. He was really tired of having his inventions abused.
