Crow darted through the skyline of Manhattan, flying close enough to the skyscrapers that her wings nearly brushed against them. She ducked and wove as the Sentinels behind her fired off shots from some kind of energy weapon. There was a searing heat coming off each one of the blasts; some of the closer misses had singed her feathers. Her only comfort right now was that they were programmed to avoid collateral damage. By staying close to tall, expensive buildings—and innocent lives—she could make sure they didn't use any of the more dangerous weapons in their arsenal. And although she was significantly slower than the mutant-hunting robots, she was still a hell of a lot more maneuverable.
Crow heard the whine of another shot powering up from behind her, and made a hard left around a building. The blast flew by behind her, catching a few tail feathers. Shit, that was a little of her critical maneuverability gone. Thankfully, she had a destination in mind. It wasn't far, and hopefully it would get the robots to stop their pursuit. If not...well, she'd figure something out then. Sentinels were great at predicting the most efficient, logical reactions. So Crow figured that making plans was probably a terrible idea. She'd wing it.
To be fair, she did deserve this. She'd started the fight. But there had only been one Sentinel then, and she hadn't expected this new, half-sized model to be quite as fast to react as they were. Or as quick to call for backup. Almost as soon as she'd finished planting the explosive charges on the first one, it had managed to call a half-dozen friends. Unfortunately, Crow wasn't quite as equipped to deal with that many. She also wasn't expecting them to be so willing to use lethal force; that was definitely new. Since she hadn't heard anything about that as a model feature, Crow suspected it might be specific to someone with her powers. Shortly after she'd decided on a strategic retreat, two more had joined in the fun. It was obvious they were trying to herd her somewhere less populated, but she had better plans.
There. The building she needed was in sight. Crow hadn't actually been in it before, but she knew the exterior. If nothing else, the flag waving above it was unmistakable. Crow pumped her wings faster, tearing through the air in a mad dash to reach it. She'd need a way in soon. Breaking a window would work, but that would be a last-case resort; she didn't want to get herself thrown right back out. There! Someone using the front door. Crow dove, angling herself towards the door, no longer worrying about dodging shots. They probably wouldn't dare shoot, this close to the building. She ducked through the space above the visitor's head, just barely grazing the doorway, and tumbled to the floor.
As if on cue, the nine Sentinels slowed to a halt, and spread out around the building. They were operating on behalf of the United States government, and had no authority here. This was Genoshan soil. The island was meant to be a safe haven for all mutants, and legally, this was an extension of that island. Crow shifted back to human, still sprawled out on the floor of the embassy. Her chest heaved as she struggled to catch her breath, but she was still grinning. That was a rush. She'd been chased halfway across the city by a horde of mutant-hunting robots, and had nothing to show for it except a few burns. She was alive and safe. At least until the Sentinels made demands, and the Genoshan ambassador kicked her right back out.
