Power Corrupts Absolutely
Power Origin: Mutant
Powers: Scott Summers can create a red colored beam of energy. His power comes from the fact that his eyes are portals to another dimension. It’s when that dimension comes into contact with our dimension that causes these concussive blasts. His eyes (with the help of the visor) can focus these blasts to be as thin or as wide as he wants. So far there is no limit to how forceful his blasts can be though it has been said that he could "rip a small planet in half". Another ability is that Cyclops is immune to his own powers because his body is protected by a psionic field which can redirect the particles that creat Scott's powers back to their origin making them inert.
Weaknesses: After 15 minutes of constant use he will need to rest for 15 minutes before he can focus his mind to hit is enemies again. Due to his brain damage he has limited control of his powers. Also, the higher the blast rating he gets less and less control of his powers. He can be easily manipulated but after he breaks free, he’s left questioning his own morality. This has lead to him to distance himself from his teammates and lovers.
Getting to the Root of the Problem
Personality: Scott Summers is a man who had a leadership position thrust upon him and though he's good at it he had to learn on the job and he made many mistakes. These mistakes have led him to distance himself from others including lovers and teammates that depend on him. Though he has greatly improved his leadership skills he still find it hard to trust his own judgment. Scott Summers is also a task master, if something doesn't go right in a "Danger Room" session he will have the team try again and again until they complete the session to Scott's approval.
Being One of the original x-men Scott made a friendship with Charles Xavier. This has caused Scott to rely on the teachings of Xavier almost to a fault, even if it means causing more of a rift between him and his team mainly Wolverine. An example would be if humans aren't to be killed but the x-men are in a battle with humans, Cyclops will have the team ignore the humans for the most part. Cyclops would send in a small task force complete the mission while the rest keep the other humans busy, with indirect fire. Though there have been times when this strategy has caused a member to be captured.
Family:
- Katherine Ann
- Christopher Summers
- Alex Summers
Background: Scott Summers was born in Anchorage Alaska to Katherine and Christopher Summers. Chris was an USAF test pilot and had a collection of private planes. One day the family was out together flying home from a nice vacation, when all of a sudden the plane's engine caught fire and began to stall and dive towards Earth. Katherine Ann, Scott's mother threw a parachute on Scott and shoved him and his brother Alex out of the falling plane. Though the parachute opened it also happened to catch fire this was where Scott first used his powers to slow their decent and save his little brother. What they didn't know was that a scout ship from the Shi'ar was what actually caused the plane to catch fire, though it's unclear whether they fired upon the aircraft or had a mid-air collision, either way the parents were saved from the burning wreckage. Though Scott and Alex were able to survive the fall Scott suffered from brain damage and unfortunately it was the part of the brain that controlled his mutant powers. They were then taken to a hospital for treatment. While at the hospital Mr. Sinister, a geneticist, took interest in Scott because of his powers. Mr. Sinister made sure that Alex was adopted out of the hospital to make Scott more susceptible to Mr. Sinister's plans.
One tragic night Scott awoke and without realizing what he was doing destroyed the Hospital roof. Scott went back to sleep and didn't awake until a year later where he found that he had been transferred to State Home for Foundling's, and orphanage run by Mr. Sinister in Omaha, Nebraska. This was where Scott was the guinea pig for many brutal experiments. Mr. Sinister placed mental blocks on Scott, and made sure that no one adopted the poor boy.
Once Scott became a teenager he began to suffer from headaches and he went to Sinister who provided Scott Summers with ruby-quartz glasses to help correct his powers. Unfortunately, while out for a walk Scotts powers erupted from his eyes and the blast destroyed a nearby crane which nearly dropped onto a crowd of people. Scot was able to destroy the falling debris with another blast from his eyes. The crowd didn't see the fact that Scott saved them and instead formed a mob and chased Scott, who escaped from them by riding a freight train.
Scott then ran into a mutant known only as Jack O'Diamonds. Jack thought that he could use Scott's powers to commit crimes and further his own agenda. When Scott refused Jack beat Scott to a pulp. However, when things looked the darkest a telepath named Charles Xavier, along with Fred Duncan an FBI agent, found Scott and enlisted the boy to be the first x-men, a team that used their gifts to try and gain mutant equality.
Scott now called Cyclops was given a visor of ruby-quartz to help control his powers in battle. Cyclops became deputy leader of the small group of mutants and fell in love with Jean Grey. Though he didn't want to admit it to himself, for fear of hurting her. This was only heightened when Angel was also interested in Jean and showed it too. However, Jean didn't want the rich fly-boy and instead chose Scott, eventually they began to date.
Soon after Jean and Scott started to date Professor X was killed and the x-men without leadership of Xavier were forced to disband. When Cyclops found Xavier's will the fortune left behind was to be used as a trust fund so the x-men could still use the mansion and Scott became a trustee for both. The x-men were reunited when young mutants were tricked into going to San Francisco by Mesmero and Magneto. Though the x-men fought valiantly they were overrun by their enemies joined forces.
After their defeat Cyclops renamed himself Erik the Red and was able to infiltrate the organization, even becoming Magneto's second in command. With Erik the Red collapsing the organization from the inside and the x-men joining the battle the x-men were able to win the day.
Scott and Alex were reunited when the x-men rescued Alex from The Living Pharaoh, though Alex refused to join the x-men at this time he eventually joined the team after they rescued Alex from Trask and his army of Sentinels, Alex became known as the mutant Havok.
Then the unthinkable happened most of the students including Cyclops were captured by Krakoa so Professor X still alive and well, sent a team of Dr. MacTaggart's students one of whom was Scott's and Alex's brother from Katherine Ann after she was saved by the Shi'ar named Gabriel. This small team was able to defeat Krakoa but all of them were nearly killed, luckily Scott was able to escape. When reunited with Professor X the Professor wiped the memory of Scott so he wouldn't remember the trauma that the student's deaths caused him. Quickly a new team was formed made up of Sunfire, Banshee, Colossus, Storm, Nightcrawler, Thunderbird and Wolverine. Cyclops led this new team back to Krakoa and saved the original x-men and students. Though the original x-men decided that enough was enough and most left. Cyclops remained feeling an obligation to lead the new x-men and the fact that since he had no real control of his powers, where would he go. Though he and Jean still dated during this time.
The new x-men though powerful in their own right weren't really a team and even though Scott ran them through multiple Danger room sessions, they still lost a member of the team, Thunderbird on their first mission at the hands of Count Nefaria. His death still haunts Cyclops to this day.
After Jean and the others left the team Jean was killed on a spacecraft headed back to earth after escaping a space station. Though in fact she did not truly die but became the Phoenix. Scott had no idea that this being wasn't the real Jean and they both continued their romance.
Once more the x-men were asked to go into space and so the journeyed to the first planet to form, the M'Kraan Crystal. This is where the team met the leader of the Starjammers, Corsair. The two groups teamed up to take down the Imperial Guard and stop the then leader of the Shi'ar D'ken from causing the universe from being sucked into a black hole. However, Storm and Phoenix learned that this man was actually Christopher Summers, Cyclops's thought to be dead father, it turns out he was sold into slavery by the Shi'ar. But, he made the two promise that they were to not reveal his true identity to Scott.
By this time Scott Summers was questioning his relationship with Jean Grey and thought that the woman he was with didn't love him like she used to. Scott decided to date Colleen Wing, but it didn't last long once Phoenix used her powers for Scott to see her with his own eyes, and a night of steamy passion ensued.
Jean Grey then decided to infiltrate the Hellfire Club, but things didn't turn out well she fell under Mastermind's control and in order to save herself she became the Dark Phoenix. This led to Cyclops and the x-men trying to reach out to her, and Xavier was able to help keep Phoenix become Jean once again, but the reunion was cut short when the Shi'ar arrived to take Phoenix away. Scott proposed to her while being transported to the Shi'ar ship. The Shi'ar wanted Phoenix out of the picture since she ate a star and killed off an entire planet. A battle was fought for Phoenix's fate, but the battle triggered Dark Phoenix to return once again. Phoenix realizing that it wasn't in full control committed suicide on the moon. This was the final straw for Scott and he decided to leave the x-men and go fishing.
Scott decided that fishing would have its own rewards so he signed onto a boat captained by Lee Forrester, the two had a crush for each other, but it never really went anywhere. After Lee's father was possessed by a demon by the name of D'spayre. The two joined forces and fought the demon, but the fight caused the two friends to be marooned on Magneto's secret base. After another battle with the master of magnetism, Cyclops rejoined the x-men. The team was forced to fight again when an unknown race came to Earth known as the Sidri. Corsair came back as well to help in the ensuing battle. Scott then noticed that Corsair wore a medallion around his neck, when Cyclops opened it, the truth became clear Corsair was in fact Christopher Summers, his father. Though Scott was able to forgive his father for hiding his true identity in time, Scott's first reaction was anger at both his father and Storm. It wasn't until later that Scott had Alex Summers, Havok, see their father alive and doing well. Corsair decided to have a family reunion where the boys could finally meet their grandparents.
The Summers family all met in Alaska for the family reunion and this is where Scott found his first wife Madelyne Pryor, who was in fact a clone to look exactly like Jean Grey that was created by Mr. Sinister. After a battle with a shark and a giant squid Scott chose that enough was enough and wanted nothing more than to sit back, relax and be a family man.
Rachel Summers appeared during this time a love child of Jean and Scott from a different timeline but decided to keep it a secret from Scott, Rachel vowed to use the Phoenix Force to restore her mother's name. Scott Summer's wife bore a son named Nathan Christopher Charles Summer, picked out by Mr. Sinister in the kitchen of the mansion after Cyclops rejoined the x-men again.. Rachel decided to psi-bond with the young boy to help protect him. Unfortunately Scott was on a mission at the time of his first son's birth. Storm and Cyclops battled it out to see who would lead the x-men. Madeylne used her latent mutant powers to make sure Cyclops lost the fight so he would leave the x-men once more and join her back in Alaska.
But life in Alaska was hard on their marriage and Scott became distant and stilled held a torch for Jean. He left in the middle of the night after he found out that Jean was alive and found at the bottom of Jamaica Bay. Scott and Jean decided that they needed to help mutants and so they with the help of the five original x-men formed x-factor. The public liked this new outfit because they thought that these weren't mutants but humans fighting mutants. Scott attempted to contact his wife but found that the line had been disconnected and hid the fact that he was married. But Jean found out and noticed why Scott would fall for the clone. After being away from his family for so long Scott felt guilty of leaving them. When he got back to Alaska he couldn't find his wife it later turns out that Madelyne was shot several times and fell into a comatose state by Mr. Sinister. She was brought to a hospital as a Jane Doe. However, Cyclops found a dead red haired woman lying in a river, believing her to be his lost wife Scott buried her.
After the death of his wife and finding out that the public relations manager of x-factor Cameron Hodge was trying to destroy the mutants. Scott and Jean Grey began another romance and the two went to the site were Phoenix committed suicide and Jean saw how Scott had loved Phoenix and Phoenix him. This is when Madelyne awoke from her coma and asked the x-men for protection. The team went to Dallas to battle the Adversary but in order to beat the Great Trickster, Forge required 9 souls but there were only 8 x-men as Cyclops was away and watched the battle on TV. Madelyne asked Scott to find their son Christopher just before Forge turned the 9 souls into pure energy and defeated Adversary. Scott with the help of Jean Grey returned to Scott Summer's orphanage and that's where they discovered the secret labs, after a tough battle Scott and Jean lost Nathan Christopher to demons.
After they found the orphanage and returned to New York they rejoined x-factor. The reunion was short lived when Madelyne arrived as the Golblin Queen and Alex Summers was the Goblin Prince. Madelyne blamed Scott and Jean for ruining her life and sent the demon N'Astirh after x-factor, with the combined strength of the x-men and x-factor the demon was finally vanquished. Atop of the Empire State Building Jean and Madelyne had a horrific fight over the life of baby Christopher. In the last part of the battle Madelyne unleashed a psionic force with the intent to kill everyone involved. The force only affected Madelyne since the other mutants protected each other. As Madelyne lay dying she pulled Jean into her mind, but Jean proved too strong and was ble to live through the experience with the help of the Phoenix force. As Jean pulled herself out of Madelyne she learned the truth that Mr. Sinister had been playing Scott Summers and his family like a well tuned fiddle. Cyclops quickly found the Mr. Sinister and appeared to kill him with one of the most powerful blasts Cyclops could create.
Once Nathan Christopher was old enough Scott had him join missions. Scott proposed to Jean but was rejected because Jean wanted to make sure they weren't being controlled anymore. Also it was during these years that Jean and Scott learned that Rachel was their child from an alternate universe. Nathan was kidnapped by the Dark Riders because Apocalypse wanted the son of Cyclops for experiments. The mutant heroes were helped by a woman who called herself Askani they were able to save their base from destruction but Cyclops lost his son in the attacks. Nathan was injected by a Techno-Organic virus and the only way to help the poor boy was to have Askani take him to the future where the was a cure. Cyclops took up her offer without knowing whether or not his boy would live.
Then a new threat appeared over the horizon when Shadow King attacked and tried to link all the minds of earth but Psylocke with the help of both the x-men and x-factor was able to beat him using her new powers that allowed her to attack him in the shadow astral plane and Shadow King was locked inside her mind. After the final battle x-factor broke up and the five original x-men returned to Professor Xavier at his school. Psylocke tried to lure Cyclops into a romance with her but Cyclops refused even when Psylocke was using her telepathic powers. Cyclops and Professor X found Alex Summers and realizing that he was no longer the Goblin Prince asked him to take over x-factor since a new mutant called Cable took the junior team and turned them into the x-force which was really an outlaw force of mutants operating outside mission parameters.
Mr. Sinister returned posing as Apocalypse and sent the four horse men to capture Scott and Jean. The two were turned over to Stryfe a clone of Scott's son Nathan who blamed Scott for abandoning him. In return Stryfe gave Mr. Sinister a matrix believed to contain the Summers entire genetic code. Cable went after Stryfe who was torturing Scott and Jean and so Cable and Stryfe had a fight. They went to the surface of the moon and were lost when a temporal device exploded and the entered the time stream. Scott was devastated by the thought that he lost his son again.
When Psylocke kissed Scott he decided that he needed to see his grandparents in Alaska. Mr. Sinister was there this time disguised as a neighbor of the grandparents. He informed Scott that a terrible virus was released upon the world because instead of the genetic matrix, Stryfe gave Mr. Sinister the Legacy Virus, a virus that was deadly to mutants. Mr. Sinister also told Scott that he had another brother, but didn't give any other information. That's when the Dark Riders appeared sent by the real Apocalypse, Scott and Mr. Sinister teamed up to battle the new threat they eventually won the battle but Mr. Sinister teleported before Scott could retaliate. Once Cyclops went back to the x-men he learned that Colossus' sister was dying from the Legacy Virus. Thankfully Beast was able to develop a cure for the virus and Colossus gave his life to see the cure work for the mutants around the world.
Cable was able to return to the present and learned the truth about his past that he was Scott's son and Stryfe was the clone. However, Stryfe was a conscience in Cable and was able to take over full control of Cable's body. It took the combined efforts of Cyclops, Jean Grey, Professor X, and Domino to convince Stryfe to leave Cable's mind forever. Then Cyclops sat down with Cable and explained as much as he could as to why he sent Cable away. This talk helped them both but wasn't able to help them with all of their problems.
After making sure that they weren't being manipulated, and seeing how Cyclops and Cable were after their talk, Jean Grey finally proposed to Scott Summers and Cyclops agreed. On the night of his bachelor party Cyclops received word that someone was in the danger room and Scott went down there to investigate. He found Cable there watching a hologram of Scott sending his son away with the Askani. At first Cable was furious but soon understood and came to respect his father when he saw Scott's grief at losing his son. Scott and Jean were finally married on the Mansion grounds and their long time love for each other was able to fully blossom.
On their honeymoon in St. Barts an elderly Rachel, who was the Mother Askani, took Scott and Jean 2000 years into the future. Scott and Jean had to take on new bodies because their own bodies wouldn't be able to survive time travel. Rachel took the two lovebirds to the moment after Scott gave Nathan away with the virus, held in check by telekinesis, was still in the boy's body. Scott and Jean were known as Slym and Redd Dayspring, and they took care of the young boy. A virus free clone of Nathan was being created in case the boy died. It was this clone that was stolen by Apocalypse, and named Stryfe. Slyme and Redd joined the clan rebellion. The rebellion had the singular goal of undermining Apocalypse his control of the Askani. The rebellion committed night time raids trying to achieve their goal. On one particular raid an 8 year old Nathan Christopher Xavier Summers followed the clan as they raided Apocalypse's citadel, soon after the rebellions arrival Stryfe, Ch'vayre, Apocalypse's second in command, and many soldiers attacked them and they were soon overwhelmed. It was during this battle that Rachel helped Nathan using telepathy to show him how to defeat Stryfe and destroy the Legacy Virus that Apocalypse was creating. It took the rebellion 5 years before they were able to raid the citadel one last time. This time though Ch'Vayre decided that he didn't want any more to do with Apocalypse's regime after he was restrained during a ritual that would place Apocalypse's conscience into Stryfe's body. During this final battle Apocalypse recognized Slym, Redd and Nathan for who they really were Cyclops, Jean and Cable. Ch'Vayre distracted his former master and Cable with orders from Cyclops was able to disrupt any telepathic link between Apocalypse and Strayfe. With the link severed and no new host body for Apocalypse, he was deemed killed by the small group of mutants. Ch'Vayre took Strayfe in and tried to undo the damage that Apocalypse did to the poor boy. Cyclops and Jean were then able to return to their own time.
Back in the present Scott and Jean told Cable that they raised him as Slym and Redd. Cable revealed to them that he had known all along and was waiting for them to tell him. Everyone was happy that they were finally a family. Cyclops and Jean moved back to the mansion and decided to live in the boat house, while Cable and his x-force were offered to stay at the mansion.
When Scott went to check on his grandfather in Alaska Jean accompanied her new husband. While there Jean met a man named Adam-x who turned out to be a Shi'ar pilot. Jean didn't tell Cyclops about the encounter and Adam-x disappeared.
The husband and wife duo was suddenly transported to Magneto's space station the Avalon. There they met Amelia Voght who was the one that teleported them to the space station, to save it from crashing into earth. Unfortunately they failed and the station landed in the Australian outback. To make up for his failure Cyclops led the survivors known as Magneto's Acolytes reach an abandoned x-men base.
During a battle between the x-men and Magnetos Acolytes, Professor Xavier used his powers on Magneto to shut down his mind. However during that contact all of Magneto's grief, pain and lust for power was merged into Xavier's conscience, this created an entity called onslaught. At first it laid dormant but after the killing of a young girl near the mansion Onslaught manifested itself. Although Cyclops and the rest of the x-men along with the Fantastic Four and the Avengers were able to free Professor Xavier, he was quickly arrested for all the deaths that he caused including the Avengers and the Fantastic Four, though they were able to come back months later after spending some time on Counter-Earth. Scott and Jean were then the headmasters of the school.
After some time passed Scott and Jean were sent back to Victorian London by Madame Sanctity, who only told them that they must stop a great tragedy. In London the two found a Dr. Nathaniel Essex and quickly recognized that he was Mr. Sinister. At first they thought that they were to make sure that this man didn't become Mr. Sinister. However, they soon realized that Mr. Sinister was necessary to make sure that En Sabah Nur, Apocalypse, didn't take over England. Only after Mr. Sinister's transformation and the defeat of Apocalypse were the two able to return to their own time.
The Dark Beast was beast from an alternate dimension, but instead of being nice and caring, Dark Beast was foul and ill-tempered he even sent one of his own a mutant named Random to infiltrate the team known as x-factor in Cyclops' reality. Random was able to brainwash Havok, Alex Summers, and have him betray x-factor. However Havok didn't truly become a terrorist, even though he made a new team called the Brotherhood. He was really there to stop the Dark Beast's sinister plans. The x-men were sent out after Havok and Havok nearly killed his brother, had Storm not saved Cyclops in the battle. Havok was able to teleport and escaped, though Scott believed him dead when he saw Havok's body be destroyed.
When the government sponsored Operation: Zero Tolerance the cyborg Bastion, created when the Master Mold merged with Nimrod and were tossed into a dimensional portal by the x-men, captured Cyclops, Storm, Wolverine, Cannonball and Jean. Though SHIELD was able to stop Bastion and shut down the organization, they were too late. Cyclops already had a nanotech bomb placed inside his chest and it took doctor Cecilia Reyes all of her skill to save his life.
Scott and Jean decided that Scott needed to recuperate after the dangerous operation. While on the plane taking them to Alaska they ran into some AIM (Advanced Idea Mechanics) soldiers. The two battled the soldiers and were able to defeat them. Scott decided that the x-men needed to reassess Xavier's dream, so he called all of the members to Alaska for a meeting.
It was during this time in Alaska that Scott began to notice that Jean was wearing her Phoenix costume and was referring to herself as such. She even manifested the flamebird during training. Scott was worried that the Phoenix had returned and Jean Grey as a result from the psi-war. The two of them decided that they were too tired to go anywhere so they stayed in Alaska and dropped the Phoenix issue. Professor Xavier was allowed to return to the school and be its headmaster again. The young couple was visited by another son from an alternate universe by the name of Nate Grey. The three of them had an encounter with Modt and Jahf, guardians of the M'Kraan Crystal. The guardians were defeated and Nate was able to spend quality time with his mom and dad.
At Storm's request Cyclops and Jean returned to the x-men. Storm called them back because she feared the Professors well being. It turns out that Professor X was only faking to lose control in order to uncover a traitor, who turned out to be a Skrull who replaced Wolverine. With further digging the x-men were able to discover a plot between Apocalypse and the Skrulls. Apocalypse wanted cosmic power so he assembled 12 mutants that would determine his fate. These mutants were Cyclops, Phoenix, Iceman, Professor X, Storm, Magneto, Ahmet Abdol, The Living Monolith, Bishop, Polaris, Sunfire, Mikhail Rasputin, Nate Grey, and Cable. The mutants were captured and attached to a machine where Apocalypse could take their life energy and using that energy he could absorb Nate Grey. As he looked around all Cyclops could see was that his teammates needed his help so Cyclops saved Nate by sacrificing himself and merged with Apocalypse. Jean made sure that the x-men wouldn't destroy Cyclops' psyche, though everyone else thought him dead. Cable in honor of his father joined the x-men, and was able to find Rachel the one who psi-linked with Cable when he was a baby. She wanted him to keep her return secret until she got everything straightened out. Jean and Cable traveled to Egypt following rumors that Scott was alive. They traveled to the city of Akkaba where they found Scott struggling to reassert his mind over Apocalypse's. With Jeans help Scott was able to free himself and Cable was able to shatter the villain's existence. With support from his family Scott was able to be himself again and joined the x-men after leaving for a short period of time to see his father and settle their differences.
Cyclops found that his merger with Apocalypse gave him a darker personality and that his marriage with Jean became more strained as he questioned his existence. Professor Xavier opened the school's doors to the mutant population at large though he was actually under the control of Cassandra Nova Xavier. Cassandra made Xavier show the world that he and his x-men were mutants. When the x-men realized what was going on Cassandra had switched minds with Charles and decided that they needed to leave Earth for a vacation. Jean was left in charge of the school and began to show more signs of the Phoenix force. This made Cyclops more distant. After a rendezvous with Logan, Jean and Logan shared a kiss, but Logan said that Jean should stay with Scott. With Jean's attention turned towards the school, Scott was left brooding over his recent battle with Apocalypse.
Cyclops met the mutant Kuan-Yin Xorn who was about to commit suicide when he learned that another wanted to harvest his brain. Cyclops asked Xorn to join him at the school, Xorn agreed, but asked for a few weeks to meditate. Scott meanwhile pushed Jean further away, even going so far as not having sex with her for 5 months. When Jean confronted Cyclops he just pushed away further. Scott went to see Emma Frost for counseling for this matter. Emma got close to Scott and the two of them began an affair.
