Usually, Cheryl wasn’t exactly a big fan of surprises. They hadn’t worked out well for her in the past. Either things got blown up, or missions failed horribly, or she found out that her personal shopper and only real girl friend was actually a guy. When Micah said he wanted to take her out for dinner somewhere—and that it was a surprise—she was understandably a little nervous. Also because, for the first time in her life, she was out in public and unsupervised. No Cliff, no Collie, no other Tanks or handlers. Something was bound to go exceptionally wrong.
Cheryl smoothed out her blouse anxiously, trying to keep herself from pacing. Even though she was starting to get used to this whole ‘dating’ thing, waiting around always put her on edge. Like, what if Micah suddenly decided he didn’t want to show up? Or worse, if got into an accident on the way here, and she didn’t know about it, and she got mad at him for not being there when it wasn’t his fault? That was ridiculous, of course. Seeing as Cliff had been too busy with real work to chaperone, there was probably a small surveillance team watching via satellites and security cameras. If anything happened to Micah, they’d know. Hell, they’d probably have backup here within twenty minutes. She was just getting nervous over nothing.
While she waited, she thought back over their last few dates. They had gone…well. Not that she was really the best judge, considering they were the only dates she’d ever been on, and she didn’t exactly trust Cliff’s judgment. She was increasingly certain that he’d remain single forever. The arcade had definitely been a learning experience. She wasn’t sure whether she’d known less about boys, or the horrible, annoying, pointless rules of shooting games. Shooting offscreen to reload. Ugh, awful. Amazingly enough, Micah had been willing to put up with her…and had even requested another date. They’d taken a long walk in Central Park, which had been somewhat ruined by Cliff trying to help them. Cheryl had yelled at him afterward, and he backed off significantly for the third date.
And now? Her babysitter was gone, and she was torn between terror and exhilaration. Either way, she was fairly certain that this was the best thing that had ever happened to her. Cheryl just really hoped that Micah got here soon. This is what she got for arriving stupidly early. Nerves.
